Is it suspicious selling too low? Many artists think so... i think is fucking BULLSHIT! If you like a work of Art do you really care how much it costs, or you just buy it cos you love it? Maybe showing off to your mates on how much you paid for a work of Art makes you feel bigger than anyone else? Pricing paintings too high may turn off potential buyers. I'm OK with expensive paintings. I have expensive paintings, but i try to be fair with my Art. I always have in mind that some people apart from the filthy rich also appreciate Art. I remember when i was a kid, looking at Art galleries, and think to myself: "HOW MUCH I WOULD LOVE TO OWN A CERTAIN PAINTING" . Art is not only for the rich, so think of that when you price your shit. The emotions you can get out of a work of Art is way more important than the price it costs. Price it as you want, but give anyone else a chance to own one of your paintings/Sculptures. Some Art is so fucking and rediculously expensive that owners hide it away in safes and you never get to see it. Is that what Art is all about? Well not for me thanks.
How should you decide on what price to put on your paintings? Some of you may have a formula that's based on the cost of materials, time and so on. Others may just work it out by the square inch. I personally don't work that way at all, as most of the times i use found and recycled materials which cost me next to nothing. What i'm saying is that a good work of Art is priceless regardless of whatever materials you use to create it or whatever time it may have taken you to complete it. One of the things that aggravate the fucking most, is when artists market their Art and brag about the quality of the materials they use. "ACID FREE PAPER" (wow! that really matters), DEEP EDGE CANVAS", (super!) "WINDSOR & NEWTON OILS" (yeah! i get you dude!) and the bullshit goes on. I mean who gives a fuck about that anyway? That ain't gonna make your work worth more, is it? In fact my favourite paintings tend to be the ones that take me the shortest time to completion, (sometimes only a few minutes) and also the ones who look the roughest and simplest. So it goes without saying that i don't price by time or materials. I don't time myself when I paint, and i don't look for any specific materials. Whatever comes to hand will do. However long it takes, it takes. I get so engrossed in painting that I lose track of time anyway. I don't paint to sell, I paint because I love it. I paint for myself. Selling to me is incidental. "I SPOKE ABOUT THAT ISSUE BEFORE SO IF YOU WANNA KNOW MORE, CHECK OUT MY PREVIOUS POSTS". I will add the gallery commission (if that's the case), plus shipping and handling, as needed of course and that should do. Usually i work by the size, simple. Paintings with the same size cost the same price. But that doesn't mean that's always the case. Weight can influence on the cost.
